  • When a word ends in ‘ic’, add ‘al’ before adding ‘ly’.
  • When a word ends in ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ before adding a suffix.
  • When a single-syllable word ends in a consonant and is preceded by a vowel, double the final consonant before adding ‘ed’ or ‘ing’.
  • When the suffix begins with a consonant, keep the silent ‘e’.
  • When a word ends in one ‘f’, change the ‘f’ to ‘v’ and add ‘es’.
  • When a word ends in ‘ss’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘x’, or ‘z’, add ‘es’.
  • When a word ends in ‘o’ and is preceded by a consonant, add ‘es’.
  • When a word ends in ‘y’ and is preceded by a vowel, just add ‘s’.
  • When a word ends in ‘y’ and is preceded by a consonant, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es’.
