Expand Vocabulary With Synonym Activities

Synonyms are words that have the same or very similar meanings. They are essential in reading and writing because they help expand students’ vocabulary and improve their language skills. Synonyms are also an excellent way for students to learn about the relationships between words and how to use them to express their ideas and thoughts effectively.

This resource download consists of 24 unique synonyms cards. Some of the activities include:

  • Finding a synonym for the identified word
  • Replacing an identified word in a sentence with a synonym
  • Identifying the non-synonym in a group of words
  • Finding matching synonym pairs
  • And more!

More Synonym Games for Your Students

These synonym task cards can be used in a variety of ways to strengthen your students’ vocabularies. Here are a few suggestions from our team:

  • Synonym Scoot – Place the task cards around the room and have students rotate through them at timed intervals. This adds energy and movement to the lesson while ensuring everyone completes a variety of question types. Students stay focused because they know they only have a short time at each station, making it a great fast‑paced warm‑up.
  • Peer Quiz Cards – Students use the task cards to quiz a partner, taking turns explaining or justifying their answers. This encourages oral language development and metacognition as they talk through why certain words match. It’s a great low‑prep station for literacy rotations.
  • Treasure Hunt – Hide the task cards around the classroom and give students a checklist or clue sheet. As they find each card, they complete the synonym challenge before searching for the next one. This turns vocabulary practice into an adventure and boosts engagement for all learners.
