Simple Sentence Writing Activity

Use this simple sentence‑writing activity to help young learners practice building simple sentences using words found around the room. Students search for familiar vocabulary, then use those words to create clear, meaningful sentences that strengthen their writing confidence. This hands-on approach encourages independence, supports early literacy development and turns a boring writing activity into an active and purposeful writing activity.

How to Play Write the Room Activity with CVC Words

A Write the Room activity turns simple sentence writing into a fun, active learning experience. Place CVC word cards around the classroom on walls, shelves, doors, tables or near familiar objects. Students move around the room, searching for each word card and reading the CVC word aloud or with a partner.

Once they find a word, students return to their worksheet and use that CVC word to complete a simple sentence frame. This might look like:

  • I see a ___.
  • The ___ is big.
  • Here is the ___.

As students work through the room, they practice decoding CVC words, identifying initial/medial/final sounds, and applying those words in meaningful sentences. This active approach helps early writers build confidence with simple sentences while reinforcing phonics knowledge in a purposeful way.
