An Antonym Word Search with a Twist!

Antonyms might seem like a fairly simple concept; however, these words play an important role in expanding our students’ vocabularies. When students learn opposites, they don’t just learn one new word – they learn two! They also must learn how these words relate to each other, helping them make more precise word choices in both writing and speaking.

This antonym word search has been designed by our team to help students learn about antonyms in a fun and engaging way. In this resource, students receive a list of 12 words. Their task is to:

  1. Work out the antonym for each word in the list.
  2. Locate the correct antonym hidden in the puzzle.

To support differentiation, two versions are included:

  • One where each antonym includes a clue letter to help guide students.
  • One with no clues, ideal for confident learners or extension tasks

This antonym word search downloads as a printable PDF or editable Google Slides file. Answers are also included in both downloads.

Extend Learning with This Antonyms Word Search

Once your students have completed this antonyms word search, there are many low-prep extensions that could solidify their understanding and support richer language use. Here are some suggestions from our team to get you started:

  • Antonym Sort – As a class, in small groups or individually, sort the antonym pairs into categories. These could include gradable antonyms, binary antonyms and relational antonyms.
  • Antonym Illustrations – Have students choose a pair of antonyms from the word search to represent visually. This is a great activity for students who express their understanding better through drawing than through writing.
  • Opposite Sentences – Have the students write a sentence using the first word in the antonym pair, then rewrite the sentence using the second word in the pair. This demonstrates a contextual understanding of each word.
