Beginning Blends Interactive Activity

Use this beginning blends interactive activity when consolidating the blending of consonant letters at the beginning of 1 and 2 syllable words for Year 1 students. This PowerPoint can be used as an individual task to reinforce learning or as a whole class activity where students blend the consonant letters together and work out which combination is correct for a phonics lesson opportunity.

Interactive Slides that Reinforce Beginning Consonant Blending

Students select the correct consonant blend for each picture and then type the two letters that create that blend directly into the slide. This click‑and‑type format strengthens phonemic awareness, supports spelling development, and encourages hands‑on engagement. Whether it’s bl for “block” or st for “star,” learners practise making meaningful sound–letter connections.

Each slide encourages students to connect what they hear, see, and type—an approach proven to boost early reading success. The activity allows students to work at their own pace and gives them the independence to try, check, and try again. Teachers can also use it as a whole‑class warm‑up, a literacy centre task, or a digital worksheet alternative.

This is amazing! Do you have something similar for digraphs?
