Collect, Sort and Compare Data Through Meaningful Investigations

Learning how to collect, organise and compare information is an important part of early mathematical development. This worksheet pack provides students with opportunities to gather data, sort information into categories and answer questions based on their findings.

Designed for Foundation students, the activities encourage children to explore familiar situations while developing essential data skills. Students sort objects, conduct simple surveys, record information using tally marks and compare results to identify more, fewer and equal quantities.

The pack includes:

  • Sorting and categorising activities.
  • Yes-or-no survey worksheets.
  • Tally mark investigations.
  • Class data collection tasks.
  • More and fewer comparison activities.
  • One-to-one matching activities.
  • Data detective challenges.
  • Story-based data investigations.

Answer keys are included to make preparation and marking quick and easy.

Data and Graphing Activities for Foundation Classrooms

This collection of data and graphing activities can be used in a variety of engaging ways:

  • Class Surveys – Students gather information from classmates and use the results to answer simple questions about the data.
  • Sorting Challenges – Encourage students to sort familiar objects into categories and explain their reasoning.
  • Data Discussions – Use the activities to spark conversations about which groups have more, fewer or the same number of items.

By working with familiar contexts and real-world examples, students develop confidence in collecting, organising and interpreting data.
