Bring your literacy lessons to life with scripts for readers theatre that boost student confidence and improve reading fluency.
Build Reading Fluency and Confidence with Readers Theatre
Readers theatre is a literacy activity where students read a script aloud, using their voice to bring the text to life. There’s no need to memorise any lines, which means students can focus their attention on word recognition and expression. Blending reading practice with performance builds students’ reading fluency and comprehension in an engaging and collaborative way.
To help you bring readers theatre to life in your classroom, the Teach Starter team have created this set of readers theatre scripts that is perfect for students in Year 3 and Year 4. The resource consists of ten readers theatre scripts. Each script is approximately two-and-a-half pages in length. The number of roles in each script varies, with some scripts containing four roles, some containing five roles and some containing six roles. Each script has also been assesed for its Flesch-Kincaid reading level to help teachers differentiate when it comes time to assigning scripts to particular groups of students.
The scripts feature fun scenarios, from space missions to failed family holidays, that will engage and entertain your students as they read. The scripts featured in this pack are:
- Best in Show
- Josephine
- Perfect Parents
- Pet Rescue
- Radio Talk
- Rhyme Time
- Solar Force Five
- The Foiled Robbery
- The Treasure Map
- Triple Trouble
This set of scripts for readers theatre downloads as a quick print PDF or editable Google Slides file. Simply print the scripts, assign roles and watch your students bring the text to life!

Here is a suggesed process that you might like to follow over the course of a week to boost your students’ reading fluency, confidence and comprehension:

- Comprehension Check-Ins – After each group has presented, informally assess the students’ comprehension by asking questions about the characters, setting, and plot. Be sure to include literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension questions!
