Sweet Success with Contractions: A Cupcake Matching Activity

Contractions can be difficult for young students to master, that’s why a teacher has created this fun cupcake matching game to help students practise their knowledge of what letters to delete to create a contraction in matching words. In this activity, students match the cupcakes with their ‘frosting’ (the two words that form a contraction), students learn to identify and use contractions effortlessly with this sweet activity.

Contractions not only help enhance reading fluency, but they also improve writing skills and build confidence in students’ reading and writing and encourage them to tackle more complex texts.

Cupcake Fun – More Ways to Use these Contraction Matching Activities

Looking for more ways to use these templates in the classroom? Check out these ideas suggested by one of our teachers:

  • Cupcake Match-Up Race: Have students race to match as many cupcakes with their corresponding words as possible in a set time.
  • Contraction Baking Challenge: Give students a list of contractions and have them “bake” a cupcake by writing out the two words that make up each contraction. Decorate the classroom with their completed cupcakes.
  • Sweet Sentences: Students pick a matched cupcake and use the contraction in a sentence. This activity helps reinforce context and meaning.
  • Frosting Fun: Create a frosting station where each student picks a cupcake (contraction) and “frosts” it by writing the expanded form on a whiteboard.
  • Contraction Cupcake Craft: Make it hands-on with a craft session. Students create paper cupcakes and write contractions and their expanded forms, then share with the class.
  • Cupcake Relay: Organise a relay race where students run to a table, pick a contraction cupcake, and match it with its two words. The first team to match all correctly wins!
