Identify and match equivalent fractions with an exciting game of dominoes!

Let’s Find Fractions That Are Equivalent!

Understanding how different fractions can represent the same amount is a tricky concept for students to understand. Students as early as year 4 work to understand that if the same amount of a shape is shaded in (regardless of the size of each piece), it is determined to be equivalent. 

Teach Starter has created a printable dominoes game for your student to practise creating equivalent fractions. This maths resource comes with 24 dominoes, a set of directions and an answer key showing different equivalent fractions.

To play:

  1. Cut out the domino cards, find the card with ½ written on both ends and place it in the centre of the playing area.
  2. Before starting the game, pair up into teams of 2. Each player draws 5 domino cards.
  3. The first player should place a domino that is equivalent to ½. It can be a numerical fraction or a picture. If the player does not have an equivalent fraction on his or her domino, it is the second player’s turn. If, by chance, the second player does not have an equivalent card, then the first player will draw until an equivalent card is found. 
  4. Each player takes turns placing down dominoes equivalent to the picture or numerical fraction on each end piece. If equivalent fractions cannot be matched with the cards in hand, then draw from the deck.
  5. Play until all cards are gone, or no more matches can be made.
  6. The player with the least amount of cards at the end is the winner.
