## Help Students Understand Decimal Place Value

Once your students have conquered whole-number place value, it’s time to delve into the wonderful world of decimal place value. Decimals are found all around us in everyday life, but they can be a challenging concept for students to grasp. A good place to start is with a simple definition of a decimal number. Essentially, a decimal number is a way of writing a number that contains a fraction. But now you have added fractions into the mix… No wonder our students can find these interconnected concepts a little tricky!

To help your students understand decimal place value and its connection with fractions, the experienced teacher team at Teach Starter has created this 18-slide teaching presentation. Written in clear, age-appropriate language and accompanied by visuals and labelled diagrams, this is the perfect resource to use when covering decimal place value with your students.

This decimals teaching presentation addresses the following concepts:

• Decimal numbers in everyday life
• Why do we need decimal numbers?
• What is a decimal number?
• Place values in decimal numbers
• Tenths and hundredths in decimal numbers
• Writing tenths as decimals
• Writing hundredths as decimals

The presentation also includes several student activities to help you monitor how your class is grasping the content and to make sure they remain focused throughout the lesson.
