Build addition strategies with this worksheet where students need to identify the missing addend and matching subtraction sum.

Strengthen Addition Through its Relationship with Subtraction

One powerful way of building proficiency in the addition concept is by exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction. This missing addend worksheet incorporates the missing addend addition sum plus asks students to show the matching subtraction sum. This worksheet reinforces addition skills and encourages students to utilise the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction as a strategic approach to three-digit addition.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to individual student work time, use this worksheet as a:

  • Maths rotations
  • lesson exit ticket
  • fast finisher activity
  • homework assignment
  • whole-class review (via smartboard)

For fast finishers, write some additional missing addends on the whiteboard in the thousands and have them work it out with the matching subtraction sum.

For students who need extra assistance, allow them to use manipulatives or initially provide them with two-digit addition sums.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardboard and slipping it into a write-and-wipe sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
