## What is a Number Bond? Why Should You Use Them?

A number bond is a mathematical diagram that helps the learner visualise the relationship between numbers, typically used in early maths education. It consists of a circle or rectangle that contains two or more parts (represented as smaller circles or rectangles) that add up to the whole.

Number bonds are a good strategy for subtraction because they help students understand the relationship between numbers and how subtraction works. By breaking a number down into its parts, students can see the members of each fact family and work toward memorisation of that grouping of numbers.

## Number Bonds to 10? Number Bonds to 20?

How about both!? This download is already differentiated. We’ve included two versions, one for your struggling learners that only includes number bonds to ten and the other that provides number bonds to twenty.

Each worksheet includes eight number bond exercises in which students must complete the number bond and then write the two subtraction equations that can be generated from the fact family.
