Lesson 3: Plastic and Concrete – How Do People Use Processed Materials?
A 60 minute lesson in which students will investigate the ways humans produce and use processed materials.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Material World video on YouTube. After the clip, discuss with the students:
- the different properties of materials
- the improvements that have been made on objects in the classroom
- the different ways in which the properties of materials can be changed.
Teacher Instruction
- Display slides 4-10 of the Plastic and Concrete – How Do People Use Processed Materials? PowerPoint. Scaffold for the students:
- definitions of processed materials
- histories of materials production
- the move towards building communities
- traditional and contemporary use of processed materials.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display slide 11 and begin the true or false quiz.
- Read aloud the instructions before asking each question. Allow time between each question for class or group discussion.
- Display slide 12. Read aloud the answers.
- Discuss any answers which are not agreed upon or for which many students answered incorrectly.
- Display slide 13. Distribute the Waste Management Investigation to groups or individual students. Explain that the students should:
- collect, measure and record the waste in one of the classroom rubbish bins in the school
- analyse their data
- design a poster to inform others of the actions they can take to reduce the waste thrown away in their classrooms.
Wrapping Up
- Display the completed posters around the classroom and have groups or individuals present their findings. Discuss why it important to reduce, reuse and recycle.

- Encourage more confident students to present their findings and poster to the class.
Supporting Students
- Support students who require further assistance by allowing them to work with a partner or teacher aide when collating their data.
