Making Predictions

Use this collection of resources when teaching students how to make predictions before reading a piece of text. Making predictions allows students to use information from the text, such as titles, headings, pictures, and diagrams to anticipate what will happen in the piece of text of they are about to read. Making predictions allow students to become actively involved in the reading process. They are able to envision what will come next in the text, based on their prior knowledge. Use the Reading Comprehension Strategy PowerPoint – Making Predictions to introduce your students to the concept and then work through the examples and the guided, whole-class activity to solidify the concept. Also provided are some posters to display in your elementary classroom, worksheets, bookmarks, and flashcards.
