Teach additive connectives with this scaffolded pack of 9 worksheets that help elementary students master connecting ideas and adding information to their writing.
Build on Ideas with Additive Connectives
Making connections between ideas and showing how one thought builds on another are key components of cohesive writing. Using additive connectives like also, furthermore, in addition and as well is one way our students can transform basic sentences into flowing, sophisticated writing.
This worksheet pack has been designed by the Teach Starter team to teach your students how additive connectives can be used across a range of text types. The pack includes 9 scaffolded worksheets that progress from simple sentences to short paragraphs to longer texts. This makes them perfect for differentiation purposes!
Some of the activities you will find in this addition connectives worksheet pack include:
- Cloze passages
- Joining sentences using addition connectives
- Identifying addition connectives in context
- Writing a paragraph using addition connectives
- And many more!
This addition connectives worksheet pack downloads as an easy-print PDF or an editable Google Slides file. Answers are included in both file options.
Engaging with this differentiated resource will help your students produce more cohesive, mature writing that flows naturally from one idea to the next.
Teaching Addition Phrases in Your ELA Lessons
Using this set of addition phrases worksheets in your ELA lessons is easy! Here’s a suggested lesson sequence you might like to follow:
- Choose a Worksheet – Start by projecting one of the simpler worksheets onto your interactive whiteboard at the beginning of your literacy lesson.
- Model Your Thinking – Complete the chosen worksheet while the students observe. Model your thinking as you work through the activities, e.g. “I think the word ‘also’ is the best choice for combining these sentences.”
- Guided Practice – Provide a similar worksheet from the pack for the students to work through in small groups. Be sure to visit each group to provide immediate feedback as the students work together on the task.
- Independent Work – Allow students who have demonstrated understanding of the concept to work on one of the other worksheets from the pack independently.
You may like to use one worksheet per week, gradually increasing complexity across the term.
