Possessive Nouns Worksheets for 3rd and 4th Grade

Apostrophes! They may be small, but they can sure cause a lot of confusion for our students! It’s common to see children confuse singular and plural possessives, omit apostrophes altogether or incorrectly add apostrophes to regular plural nouns. That’s why explicit teaching of the possessive apostrophe is so important!

To help your students gain confidence using the apostrophe of possession, Teach Starter has created this jam-packed worksheet pack. The resource includes six printable worksheets and matching answer keys featuring a variety of activities, including:

  • Selecting the correctly punctuated possessive noun from multiple-choice options
  • Completing possessive noun charts to identify owners and possessions
  • Sorting singular and plural possessive nouns according to the apostrophe rule used
  • Rewriting phrases using apostrophes of possession
  • Choosing the correct possessive noun within sentence contexts
  • Editing a paragraph to add missing apostrophes of possession

The varied activity types within this possessive nouns worksheet pack help keep students engaged while providing repeated exposure to the rules and patterns needed for mastery.

This resource downloads as a black-and-white PDF or editable Google Slides file. The download also includes an answer key to make grading the worksheets fast and easy.

Differentiate Learning with This Possessive Nouns Worksheet Pack

Teachers know that every classroom contains students working at different levels of confidence with grammar concepts. This possessive nouns worksheet pack has been designed by our team to support differentiation by catering to a range of learning needs:

  • Targeted intervention groups – Use the possessive noun chart and phrase-rewriting worksheets with students who need additional support understanding the relationship between an owner and what belongs to them. These scaffolded activities help make the concept of possession more explicit before students apply the rules independently.
  • Literacy rotations and centers – Use the multiple-choice and color-coding activities in your literacy centers. These tasks provide opportunities for meaningful, collaborative discussions about the apostrophe of possession and its correct placement in singular and plural possessive nouns.
  • Independent consolidation activities – Assign the sentence- and text-based worksheets to students who have already been introduced to apostrophes of possession and need opportunities to strengthen their understanding through focused in-context practice.
