Support students in comparing quantities by providing an easy, hands‑on activity that lets them sort items and decide if they can be shared evenly.

Comparing Collections Made Easy for the Classroom

This sorting activity introduces students to the idea of comparing collections by having them examine picture cards and decide whether there are “Enough” or “Not Enough” items for a given number of children.

Students learn by doing: they look closely at each collection, think about sharing equally, and place the cards into the correct pile. This simple structure builds confidence with early division concepts, equal sharing, and basic comparison skills.

Teachers love the resource because it’s quick to prep, encourages meaningful math talk, and provides a visual, hands-on alternative to traditional worksheets.

Exploring This Equal Sharing Activity in Creative Ways

This activity supports a range of comparing collections strategies and can be used far beyond basic sorting:

  • Number Talks: Display a card and discuss the strategies students use to justify whether there are “enough” items or “not enough.”
  • Re-creation Station: Students rebuild the images with manipulatives and adjust quantities using addition or subtraction.
  • Fix-It Challenge: Students choose a “Not Enough” card and work out how many more items are needed.

Easy Access to Your Digital and Printable Versions

The resource is available as a ready-to-download PDF and an editable Google Slides file so you can customize it for your students. (You’ll be prompted to make your own copy of the Google Slides.)
