A Coordinate Plane Anchor Chart For Easy Reference

This coordinate plane anchor chart poster explains the features of the four-quadrant coordinate plane. It is available in full-color, low-color, and black-and-white versions, so you can choose what works best for your classroom and your students.

This coordinate plane anchor chart / poster displays these features:

  • Coordinate plane
  • X-axis
  • Y-axis
  • Coordinates
  • Origin
  • Quadrant 1
  • Quadrant 2
  • Quadrant 3
  • Quadrant 4

This teaching resource is a great addition to any coordinate plane unit! Display it in your classroom or print a copy for each of your students to keep in a math folder or notebook for reference.

Plotting Points on a Coordinate Grid – Coordinate Plane Poster Tips and Tricks

Do your students mix up the X and Y coordinates and plot points in the wrong spot? Here are some fun analogies to help them keep these two coordinates straight!

  1.  Alphabet Analogy – X comes before Y in the alphabet, and X also comes before Y in a coordinate pair.
  2. “Change the Lightbulb” – When changing a lightbulb, people walk OVER until they are under the lightbulb, and then climb UP the ladder to change it. They wouldn’t climb the ladder first and then hop it over to the bulb! Use this analogy to help students remember to find where their coordinate is on the x-axis first, and then the y-axis for coordinates with a positive Y value.
  3. “Find the Treasure” – When finding a buried treasure, a pirate walks OVER to the spot their map indicates and then digs DOWN to find their treasure. They wouldn’t dig down first and then tunnel through the earth! Use this analogy to help students plot points when their coordinate has a negative Y value.
