Segmenting Phonemes Game Board

Use this pirate-themed printable game board and pieces for your students to practise breaking words into their phonemes in a fun and engaging way. Students should always be encouraged to say aloud how they break up words into their sounds. As this is done more and more in your classroom – it will become a habit and routine for them always to do this.

This aim of this game is to collect as many coins as you can when going through the board and breaking up the different words. To enhance differentiation, two variations of the task cards are provided, one with the words and one with just the picture. Choose the style of task card that suits the needs of the students in your class or small group.

Benefits of Playing Board Games in the Classroom

There are many benefits to playing board games in the classroom, especially if they focus on a key skill the students need to develop, such as phoneme segmentation. Here are just a few of the benefits:

  • Enhances vocabulary development; when playing board games that involve segmenting words into their individual sounds, students are exposed to a variety of new words and their corresponding sounds. This exposure can enhance their vocabulary development.
  • Encourage social interaction; board games are a fun and interactive way for children to learn certain skills and encourage social interaction and communication.
  • Developing cognitive skills. Board games that require children to segment words into their individual sounds can help develop their cognitive skills, such as memory, attention, and concentration.
