Practice recognizing halves and fourths with this differentiated basic fractions worksheet for 1st and 2nd grade.
Basic Fraction Worksheets for 1st and 2nd Grade
This worksheet is designed to help students learn and practice identifying equal parts of shapes and creating fractions when given a visual model.
This download includes 2 different worksheets with varying levels of difficulty. The lower-level version (as noted with one star in the upper right-hand corner) encourages students to determine which shapes have been correctly divided into two parts. They must then use their understanding of halves to partition shapes and shade in one half on each. Students will also practice recognizing which shapes have been partitioned into four equal parts.
The higher-level version of this worksheet (two stars) encourages students to look at a shaded model and write the fraction with words (i.e., three-fourths, one-half, etc.).
An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:
- Guided math groups
- Lesson warm-up
- Lesson wrap-up
- Fast finishers
- Homework assignment
- Whole-class review (via smartboard)
If students need an additional challenge, encourage them to complete the two-star version of this assignment. Students can also attempt to represent each fraction on a number line.
For students who need additional support, encourage them to complete the one-star version of this resource, as noted in the upper right-hand corner. Additionally, invite students to reference posters and anchor charts to help them recall the meaning of halves and fourths.
