Inferencing with Pictures Activity

Use this engaging Inferencing with Pictures Activity to develop the inferential comprehension skills of your younger students in a fun and highly visual way.

This resource uses carefully selected images to encourage students to look beyond what they can see and think more deeply about what might be happening. Each slide includes an accompanying set of questions designed to guide students in making inferences, drawing conclusions, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the image.

Students will learn that good readers don’t just see — they think, question, and infer.

More Activities for Inferring

This resource is highliy adaptabpe and can be used in a variety of ways – here are just a few more inferring activities you could do using these images.

  • What Happens Next?  Show an image and ask students to predict what might happen next, using clues from the picture.
  • Think Aloud Modelling – Model your own thinking by verbalising how you infer from an image (e.g., “I notice…, so I think…”).
  • Freeze Frame Drama – Have students act out a scene from an image and explain what is happening and why.
  • Matching Emotions Activity – Show images of characters and have students infer how they are feeling and what might have caused those emotions..
  • Inferencing Journals – Students record their inferences with drawings and simple sentences to reinforce understanding.
