Engage your students with a Magnetic Maze and help them discover the power of magnetic fields in the real world!

Your First Graders Will Love This Magnetic Maze Activity!

Looking for a hands-on way to bring magnetism to life in your classroom? Your kindergartners will love this magnetic maze activity! These interactive task cards turn a basic science concept into an exciting, skill-building challenge. Students will use a magnetic wand or other magnetic object underneath the table or tray to guide a small magnetic item (like a paperclip or magnet ball) through a printed maze—no batteries or screens required!

This activity is a great way to reinforce science content while building fine motor skills, focus, and problem-solving abilities.

Using Your Printable Magnetic Mazes in the Classroom

These printable magnetic mazes are designed to serve as an independent science center activity in which students will explore magnets and the force of a magnetic field passing through a tabletop to manipulate and move objects in a designed path . For best results, we recommend setting up and using this resource as follows.

  1. Print and laminate the magnet maze cards.
  2. Tape each card to a table top (or desk with an opening for student materials) by adding a piece of tape to the end of each card.
  3. Provide each student with a paper clip or other small magnetic object, such as a nut, bolt, safety pin, or tack, and a magnet wand.
  4. Instruct students that they will visit each card and discover that magnets use a magnetic field to attract objects containing iron, and that these fields can pass through other materials like a desk or table top.
  5. Students will visit a card and place their paperclip on the starting dot, then they will place their magnet wand under the table or inside their desk.
  6. From there, they will use their hands to manipulate the magnet wand beneath the table in an attempt to move the paper clip along the given path without touching it. It’s like magic!
  7. As students complete each magnetic maze, they can move on to the next magnet maze in the series until they’ve attempted all of them.
