Are your students still confusing some of the text features found in nonfiction text? You are definitely not alone! This versatile resource is a great way to give those students the extra practice they may need to master the skill!
Ways to Use These Cards in the Classroom:
- For an individual activity, have your students match the text feature with the corresponding example. It makes for a great reading center activity in your classroom.
- For a partner or group activity, have your students play a game of “Memory”. Place the cards face down in the middle of the playing area. Player 1 flips over two cards. If they match, the player keeps the cards. If they do not match, the player turns them both face down in their original location. Play continues until there are no more cards in the playing area. The player with the most cards wins!
- For a whole-class activity, use the cards as a Scoot game! Pull out the text feature example cards and hang them around the room. Have your students rotate through the cards, individually or with a partner, writing down the text feature on their recording sheet.
- Why not use them as a random partner generator? Pass out a card to each student. Then, have the students walk around the room to find their match! The person that holds their match will be their partner for the next activity or think-pair-share. It is a great way to reinforce the skill while assigning partners!
