Ways to Use These Writing Prompts for Opinion Writing

These writing prompts for opinion writing can be used in a variety of ways to help your students fine-tune their persuasive writing skills. Here are some ideas you might like to consider in your planning:

  • Verbal Debates – Choose a prompt, then let the students pick which option they prefer. Conduct a class discussion that allows students to share their viewpoints verbally. This approach is ideal for students who need to verbalize their ideas before writing.
  • Modeled Planning and Writing – Choose a prompt, then project it on your interactive whiteboard. Model the process of planning and writing a persuasive text with your students. Show how to brainstorm arguments, compile evidence, then write a text following the appropriate structural conventions.
  • Rhetorical Devices Focus – Choose a prompt, then place the students in small groups. Assign each group a rhetorical device, e.g. rhetorical questions, modality, emotive language. Have the students brainstorm examples of their device that could be used in a text for the chosen prompt.
