Our Solar System - Interactive and Printable Cloze Reading Activity

Teach Starter Publishing
Google Slide, PDF | 1 page | Grades: 3 - 4

Practice and review concepts associated with the solar system using a cloze passage.

No-Prep Lessons on the Solar System

The solar system consists of the Sun and everything that orbits, or travels around, the Sun. How well do your students know about our solar system?

This worksheet integrates Science and Reading concepts by requiring students to use a word bank to complete a reading passage on the Solar System. It is a great way to assess your students’ vocabulary and understanding of the solar system.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

  • Guided reading groups
  • Lesson warm-up
  • Lesson wrap-up
  • Fast finishers
  • Homework assignment
  • Whole-class review (via smartboard)

Extension Activities

Challenge your fast finishers to extend their learning by:

  • participating in a research project or essay. We’ve got a great Planet Project Template they can use.
  • creating their own Cloze Reading Passage for a partner to complete. Why not have them include comprehension questions while they are at it?

Support Struggling Students

Support struggling readers or ESL students by:

  • providing pictures or realia to enhance vocabulary instruction.
  • providing fewer options in the word box.
  • scrambling the letters to each word, writing on separate sticky notes, and sticking each one on the corresponding blank. This will give the student an extra bit of help in identifying the correct term.
