What are High Frequency Words? (Heart Words and Flash Words)
High‑frequency words are the words children encounter most often in print. Many are decodable using phonics, while some are irregular (having one or more unexpected letter–sound correspondences). According to the science of reading, the goal is not to have students memorize whole words visually. Instead, students learn high‑frequency words through a process called orthographic mapping — linking the sounds in a word to the letters in a way that allows the word to be stored in long‑term memory for automatic retrieval.
These Roll, Read and Write High Frequency game worksheets are the perfect way for students to practice their orthographic mapping of these words.
The words have been split into heart and flash words:
- Heart words are high‑frequency words with one or two tricky parts that students must learn “by heart” because they don’t follow regular phonics patterns.
- Flash words are fully decodable high‑frequency words that students can read quickly by applying the phonics skills they already know.
How to Play High Frequency Word Games
One of the best ways for students to practice reading these words is through game play. Our set of Roll Read and Write Games is easy to implement in the classroom.
- Divide the students into groups of 2-4.
- Provide each student with a game board and each group with a die.
- Students take turns rolling the die and selecting a sight word from the corresponding line to read aloud. After reading a sight word, they cover it with a counter.
- Continue playing until all the words on the board have been read.
- If you want them to practice writing these words as well – you can use the roll, read and write boards!
