Which Unit Should Be Used to Measure?

This hands-on resource for teaching length makes a perfect addition to your math centers! Print the resource on cardstock for increased durability.

Students must sort the length and distance pictures according to whether they are measured in centimeters, inches, feet, or miles. To familiarize the students with these concepts, a range of length vocabulary (width, height, depth, distance) has been used.

Some examples include:

  • the length of an ant
  • the distance between two cities
  • the length of a car
  • the height of a house
  • the width of a pencil eraser.

Need an extension activity? Ask any fast finishers to research the actual measurement of some of the lengths and distances on the cards, then share this information with the class!
