Explore Light and Shadow With a Shadow Walk Activity!

Bring the wonder of light, shadow, and science inquiry into your classroom with this hands-on Shadow Walk activity pack!

Designed for kindergarten and first-grade learners, this pack encourages students to become shadow hunters as they explore and observe how light creates shadows. With fun picture cards, observation sheets, and interactive challenges, your students will actively discover how light behaves and how shadows form in different environments.

This activity is designed for teaching early science skills such as making scientific observations, using graphic organizers, and recording scientific data in an organized format. It is also a perfect science activity for getting students up, moving, and engaged in scientific exploration.

Science Observation Activities for Kindergarten

Your students will build their knowledge of light, shadow, and science observation skills through a series of interactive and sequential activities. This resource pack includes the instructions and printables needed for the following activities:

  1. Introduction & Picture Card Review – This component features teacher instructions and a small collection of picture cards to discuss sources of light.
  2. Be a “Light Detective” – This component requires students to walk around the classroom while searching for and observing additional light sources.
  3. Outdoor Shadow Walk – This component discusses the sun as a natural light source and takes the students on a shadow walk outside. Students will complete the Shadow Hunt sheet(s), choosing one or both depending on time.
  4. Shadow Challenge – This component invites students to work in pairs to complete the Shadow Challenge, using their observation and recording skills to track their completion.

Through these activities, students develop critical scientific observation and recording skills while having fun exploring the world of light and shadow.
