A Hands-On Game for Subject-Verb Agreement

Let’s face it… subject-verb agreement isn’t the most exciting grammar topic going around! However, you can make it a little more appealing by turning learning into a game!

This hands-on dice game has been created by our team to support your students in learning about subject-verb agreement. The resource features two dice: a subject dice and a verb dice. Students work together in pairs, with each student rolling either a subject or verb die. The pair will write down any accurate matches and use them as sentence starters.

  • Subject dice – mouse, Ben, children, they, frogs, Grandma
  • Verb dice – spins, bakes, sway, hop, nibbles, holler

How to Play This Subject Verb Agreement Dice Game

Here’s a quick rundown on how to play the game:

  1. Put students into pairs and hand each student a piece of notebook paper (or they can work in a notebook).
  2. Assemble the subject cube and the verb cube.
  3. Each student rolls their dice and determines if the subject and verb agree. If they agree, they should record the subject and verb on their paper. If they do not agree, students should roll again.
  4. Partners should keep rolling until they have four matches.
  5. Students use the subject and verb agreement matches as sentence starters and finish the sentences e.g. Peter jogs quickly around the suburban park each morning before work.
  6. Once students are finished, check their work for understanding.

Easily Download to Teach Subject Verb Agreement

This subject-verb agreement dice game downloads as an easy print PDF or an editable Word file. The Word file allows you to change the subjects and verbs on the dice as many times as you like.

We recommend printing the dice templates on cardstock for added durability.
