A fun art activity to explore texture on a mandala.
Use this teaching resource when studying texture as one of the Elements of Visual Art or exploring symmetry. Students experiment with rubbings of objects using colored pencils. The rubbings are then done within a mandala. A mandala is a circular design that is symmetrical around the center. Patterns are often repeated within the design.
The mandala template, which is provided, needs to be printed on legal size paper so that the sections are large enough to accommodate the rubbings. When looking for objects to take rubbings from, keep in mind that highly textured, bumpy objects work best.
The mandala looks very effective when cut out and mounted on black or colored paper.
