Explore Website Features with Flashcards
Let’s face it… Our students are spending more and more time in online environments these days. For this reason, it’s essential that they understand how to navigate online texts by using text features such as hyperlinks, navigation bars and search tools to their advantage.
This set of 16 flashcards has been specially designed to help elementary school students recognize and understand common website navigation tools and their purposes. Each flashcard provides a definition of the online text feature, accompanied by a visual representation of it.
Some of the website features included in this set of flashcards are:
- Header and footer
- Images and captions
- Embedded media
- URL address bar
- Sidebar
- Hyperlinks
- And many more!
This set of website features flashcards downloads as a full-color PDF or editable Google Slides file. We recommend printing on cardstock to increase the durability of the resource.
Whether you’re introducing online texts for the first time or reinforcing prior learning, these flashcards will give your students the confidence to navigate digital content independently.
Engaging Activities for Teaching the Features of a Website
These features of a website flashcards can be used in a variety of ways in your classroom to reinforce the purpose and functionality of these key navigation tools. Here are some ideas you might like to include in your repertoire:
- Whole-Class Instruction – Show each card to the students in turn. Read the definition together, then discuss where the students may have seen the feature before (e.g. YouTube, Google, product websites). Talk about the functionality of each feature and how it makes accessing information online easier.
- Digital Scavenger Hunt – In groups, pairs or individually (depending on the number of devices available), have students bring up an age-appropriate website. Show each flashcard in turn, then have the students locate that feature on the webpage and experiment with its functionality.
- Guess the Function – Cover the name and definition on each flashcard with a sticky note or similar. Show each flashcard in turn and see if the students can identify both the name and function of the online text feature shown by using the visual representation alone.
