Have your students investigate the requirements of being a Paralympic Winter Games host city with this inquiry-based learning project.

What Does It Take to Host the Paralympic Winter Games?

Hosting the Paralympic Winter Games is a huge job. A city or region needs special geography, facilities and planning to make everything safe, accessible and fun for athletes and spectators from around the world.

This inquiry task requires students to explore what it takes for a city or region to host the Winter Paralympic Games. They will investigate the environmental conditions needed for winter sports, the geographical features that make Paralympic events possible, and the accessibility requirements that ensure all athletes can compete safely and fairly. They will then choose a location anywhere in the world and create a persuasive pitch explaining why it should be the next host of the Winter Paralympic Games. This pitch can be presented as a digital slide deck or a paper-based booklet.

  • Student instructions
  • Reading comprehension passage
  • Research graphic organizers
  • Booklet template
  • Achievement rubric

Further Extend This Winter Paralympics Inquiry Project

This open-ended inquiry project provides multiple opportunities for further exploration into the requirements of being a Paralympic host city. Here are some ideas from our team to get you started:

  • Design an Accessible Venue Plan – After selecting their host city, students could create a detailed map showing how venues and facilities will meet accessibility standards for athletes and spectators. This could include features like adaptive transport routes, wheelchair-friendly seating and tactile signage.
  • Develop a Sustainability Strategy – Students could research and propose eco-friendly solutions for hosting the Games, such as renewable energy sources, waste reduction plans, and strategies to minimize environmental impact on snow-based ecosystems.
  • Cultural Inclusion Component – Students could explore how the host city will celebrate cultural diversity and inclusivity during the Games, such as through ceremonies, local traditions and community engagement programs.
