Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Identifying Numbers
A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify the numbers from 0 to 10.

Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Numbers Song video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- Whatย are numbers?
- How can numbers help us?
- Where do we see numbers?
- As a class, use the Goals – Numeracyย resource to set place value goals to achieve by the end of the unit. Display the agreed goals in the classroom and refer to the goals throughout the unit.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slides 5 ofย the Identifying Numbers PowerPoint. Encourage the students to suggestย other numbers that they know and invite confident students to record these as numerals or words on the board.
- As a class, complete the activity on slideย 6 and discuss the answers on slide 7. Ask the students to explain how they were able to distinguish the numbers from the letters.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display and discuss slide 8 as a class. Invite the students to think, pair and share the numbers that can be found on their letterbox or car number plate at home.
- Provide each student with a copy of the Identifying Numbers – Jungle Number Hunt Worksheet. Monitor and support the students as theyย find the numbers from 1 to 9.
- Once the students have finished, locate the numbers on the worksheet together as a class.
Wrapping Up
- Students watch and listen to the Identifying Numbers 0 to 10 video on YouTube. At the end of the video,ย use the Zero to Twenty Posters as flash cards to randomly show the numbers from 0 to 10. Ask the students to identify each number.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Invite more capable students to make numbers of their choice on the floor using dominoes, as shown in the first video. Alternatively, make the numbers with counters.
Supporting Students
- Invite less confident students to work in small groups with the teacher or teacher aide.
