Lesson 2: Sensational Stretching
A 60-minute lesson designed to explain how certain materials can be stretched.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Preparation
Prior to conducting the lesson, review the procedure and equipment required for the game. Ensure selected students have brought in their stretchy objects for the warm-up discussion in this lesson.Equipment
- glue
- elastic
- rope
- satin ribbon
- stretchy fabric
- metre rulers
- pantyhose
- printing paper
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Ask students to sit in a circle and distribute the five stretchy items that the selected students have brought in. Ask them to pass the items around, so everyone gets a chance to observe and interact with each object. As students pass the items around, promote thinking by asking what they notice about each object and how they can interact with it. For example, “How does it act when it stretches? What do you think it is used for? Can it return to its original shape?”
Teacher Instruction
- Display the Chemical Sciences: Clever Changes – Teaching Presentation. Read over the learning objective on Slide 13.
- Read through Slides 14 to 19. Encourage student engagement by asking the questions prompted in the presentation.
- Watch the video Chemical Sciences: Clever Changes – Stretch. Watch different examples of bending. Before proceeding to the question-and-answer part of the video, discuss what students observed and answer any questions. You may want to watch this part more than once. Afterwards, play through the questions and answers, pausing after each question to give students the chance to contribute answers.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Provide each student with a copy of the Spot the Stretchy Difference – Worksheet. Read through the instructions and ensure students understand the task.
- Monitor and support students as they complete the activity. Encourage them to use as much detail as possible. As students complete the task, have them find a partner to compare and discuss their diagrams with.
- Divide the class up into pairs to play Stretchy Scoot Relay. Read through the instructions and ensure students understand the game.
Wrapping Up
- Discuss the Stretchy Scoot Relay and which objects were the most and least stretchy. Paste a sample of each material from the game on a poster in order of most to least stretchy. Include this poster on your unit display wall.
- Revise the facts about materials that stretch, and add any relevant new words to the Chemical Sciences: Physical Changes – Word Wall.
- Ask for five volunteers to bring in something bendy before the next lesson. Communicate with parents to ensure students have permission to bring items to school safely.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Allow more-confident students to complete the questions and answers part of the video Chemical Sciences: Clever Changes – Stretch as an independent written quiz.
- After playing Stretchy Scoot Relay, give more-confident students the chance to make their own stretchy material display poster.
Supporting Students
- Allow less-confident students to complete Spot the Stretchy Difference – Worksheet in pairs or in a small group.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
- encouraged student self-reflection
- administered formal assessment tasks.
