Exploring Author Style in the Classroom

Author style is the unique way a writer tells a story. It’s shaped by the choices authors make, such as what they write about, how they describe characters, settings and events, and the kind of language they use. Every author has their own voice and unique way of telling a story that makes their writing special.

This comprehensive 28-slide teaching presentation has been created by our team to teach your students about the different elements that contribute to an author’s style. Designed with primary school classrooms in mind, the resource uses clear explanations, examples and visuals to break down the concept of author style into manageable parts.

The elements of author style included in this presentation are:

  • Genre
  • Subject Matter
  • Theme
  • Characters
  • Plot
  • Narrative Voice
  • Language Choices
  • Sentence Structure
  • Illustrations and Visuals

Teachers can easily guide students through the slides, sparking discussion and encouraging students to think critically about how writers create a distinctive voice.

Analyse Author Style of Writing with Your Students

This author style slide deck provides a solid foundation for introducing this important writing concept to your students. Once students have explored the slides, you can extend their learning with simple but effective activities, such as:

  • Text Comparison – Provide students with two short passages by different authors and have them identify similarities and differences in their stylistic choices.
  • Style Imitation – Ask students to rewrite a short passage in the style of a well-known author, encouraging them to replicate their stylistic elements as closely as possible.
  • Group Discussion – Facilitate conversations where students share their favourite authors and describe what makes their style unique.

These activities give students opportunities to apply what they’ve learned from the slides in hands-on and creative ways.
