Data and Graphing Activities That Make Learning Meaningful

Learning about data and graphing helps students understand how information can be collected, organised and used to answer questions. Through practical investigations and engaging tasks, students develop important mathematical skills while exploring topics that connect to their everyday experiences.

This worksheet pack provides a variety of opportunities for students to work with data in meaningful ways. From sorting information into groups to conducting simple surveys and recording results, students learn how to organise data and make observations about what it tells them.

The pack includes:

  • Survey and recording activities.
  • Tally mark investigations.
  • Sorting and classification tasks.
  • Data recording worksheets.
  • Data analysis questions.
  • Real-world information gathering activities.
  • Compare and discuss tasks.

These activities support the development of early statistical thinking while helping students build confidence when working with information.

Collecting and Organising Data Through Hands-On Investigations

This resource has been designed to encourage active participation and discussion:

  • Classroom Research Projects – Students gather information from their classmates and organise their findings in a clear and meaningful way.
  • Observation Activities – Encourage students to collect data from objects, events or features in their classroom and school environment.
  • Data Comparison Tasks – Students examine results, identify similarities and differences, and discuss what the data reveals.

Because the activities use familiar contexts, students can focus on developing data skills while making real-world connections.
