Explore the advantages and disadvantages of being the host city for the Olympics in this inquiry and speechwriting task.
Is Hosting the Olympic Games Really Worth It?
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live in a city that is set to host the Olympic Games? Is it an experience of a lifetime, or is simply too much stress and hassle?
This speechwriting task requires students to truly consider what it means to host an Olympic Games. Students must research the capital city of their state (or alternative) and evaluate how well equipped it is (or could be) to host an Olympic Games in the near future. Based on their research, they must write a speech that recommends whether the government should or should not bid for the upcoming Olympic Games.

- Create a Promotional Video –Have the students produce a short, persuasive video to accompany their speech, highlighting their city’s strengths for hosting the Olympics.
- Develop a Budget – Have students outline estimated costs and potential revenue for hosting the Games, then justify whether the bid is financially feasible.
- Mock Press Conference – Have the students participate in mock press conference, playing the roles of city officials and journalists in a Q&A session.
