Phrase or Clause? Let’s Get Sorting!

Clauses are a tricky concept for students to grasp. Sometimes they can stand alone as a sentence, sometimes they can’t… It’s no wonder this important grammatical topic causes confusion for kids!

There’s a golden rule to remember when it comes to identifying clauses: they must have both a subject and a verb. If they have only one of these, or neither, then you’re dealing with a phrase. For many primary students, understanding this difference is essential for writing stronger sentences, avoiding fragments and improving reading comprehension.

In this sorting activity, students will practise distinguishing between phrases and clauses by looking for the subject and the verb in each example. The resource contains 24 cards that students must sort into the correct category. It’s a brilliant way to shift grammar learning from pencil‑and‑paper drills to an engaging, hands‑on task.

This phrase or clause sorting activity downloads as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file. It contains:

  • Instruction page
  • 2 x sort headings (Clause, Phrase)
  • 24 x sort cards
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

This phrases and clauses sorting activity can be used for a variety of activities to engage your students in their learning. Here are some ideas for how you might use these cards in your classroom:

  • Prove It Game – Have students pick up a card and explain why the example is a phrase or a clause, e.g. This is a phrase because it has a verb but no subject.
  • Show Me! – Show the students one card at a time, then have them write ‘phrase’ or ‘clause’ on their whiteboards and hold them up.
  • Create a Sentence Challenge – After sorting, have the students build complete sentences for each of the clause and phrase cards.
