Teach schwa words to your students with this interactive drag-and-drop activity that helps identify the schwa sound in unstressed syllables.
Explore Schwa Words with a Digital Activity
If there were an award for the least cooperative sound in English, the schwa would be a strong contender! Just when students think they’ve worked out their short and long vowel sounds, along comes a vowel that doesn’t sound like either of these. It’s no wonder the schwa can be so confusing for emerging readers and writers!
To help you demystify the schwa sound for your students, Teach Starter has created this engaging digital activity. It features 10 different interactive slides, providing multiple opportunities for students to identify the location of the schwa sound in multisyllabic words.
Some of the activities featured in the schwa words digital activity include:
- Sort words into ‘Schwa’ and ‘No schwa’ categories.
- Use the paint tool to colour-code where the schwa falls in words.
- Sort the words based on the position of the schwa sound.
- Match the word to the vowel making the schwa sound.
- Find and type the word in the sentence containing the schwa.
- And more!
This digital resource for teaching the schwa sound downloads as a Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides file. Answers can be downloaded as a separate PDF file.

Build a Strong Understanding of Schwa in Words Through Explicit Instruction and Repeated Practice
The schwa is a bit of a rule-breaker. Fortunately, with plenty of explicit teaching and practice, students can learn to spot this sneaky sound in multisyllabic words. Here’s why explicit instruction and reinforcement of this tricky phonics concept is so important:
- Schwa is everywhere – The schwa sound is extremely common. Students will encounter it frequently, so they need to be able to recognise it!
- Schwa is inconsistent – The schwa sound does not have a consistent spelling. It can be represented by multiple letters, making encoding and spelling more complex.
- Schwa breaks the rules – Teaching about schwa in unstressed syllables helps students understand that although the vowel sound may change in pronunciation, the spelling is based on the phoneme-grapheme correspondences they have learned.
This resource helps deepen students’ understanding of this important phonics and spelling concept by providing hands-on opportunities to work with schwa in words in an engaging digital format.
