Printable Synonyms Worksheets for Year 1

What are synonyms? Why do we need them?

Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings. They are important in reading and writing because they help to expand vocabulary, improve communication, and make writing more varied and interesting. Using synonyms also helps avoid repetition and makes writing sound more sophisticated.

The set of worksheets has been designed for younger students so they may practise identifying and using synonyms in context. It includes the following activities:

  • Picture Match: Students look at an image, then cut and paste a word from the word bank to identify the synonym.
  • Synonym Swap:  Students use a word bank to cut and paste a synonym into a sentence.
  • Synonym Cut and Paste: Students read simple sentences and cut/paste words to match the underlined word.
  • Synonym Exit Ticket:  Students will identify a synonym for a given word, then draw a picture of that word. We’ve included six exit tickets that are perfect for informal assessments.
