Teaching Verb Groups in Year 2

This resource supports Year 2 teachers in explicitly teaching that verbs may be expressed as verb groups, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum. Students explore how helping verbs and main verbs work together to form verb groups within a meaningful text.

The included activity pack, Verb Groups in Action, guides students through identifying and building verb groups using the story A Day at Sunshine Park.

Curriculum Focus of this Resource

English – Language: Expressing and developing ideas. Understanding that verbs represent different processes and that these processes may be expressed as verb groups. This activity introduces students to:

• Main verbs (doing/being/having words)
• Helping verbs (am, is, are)
• Verb groups that show ongoing actions (e.g., is running, are playing)

The learning intentions of this resource is that students will identify verbs in a narrative text, recognise helping verbs within sentences. Build and record verb groups and understand how verb groups support meaning by showing when and how actions occur. 

Students can:

• Highlight main verbs and helping verbs in the text
• Correctly combine helping verbs with main verbs to form verb groups
• Use verb groups in their own sentences
