Explain what is a clause to help students confidently identify subjects and verbs and build stronger, more accurate sentences across their writing.
What Is a Clause?
A clause is simply a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. Sounds simple enough, but for many primary students, the idea can be quite abstract. This is why it is important to teach what a clause is (and what it isn’t!) in a manageable, age-appropriate manner.
This 12-slide teaching presentation has been created by our team to make this concept accessible and engaging for primary students. The slides break down the topic into manageable parts, covering:
- What clauses are
- Subjects
- Verbs
- Short vs long clauses
- What phrases are
Each slide is visually engaging and includes definitions, examples and age-appropriate explanations. Review activities are also included to make formative assessment a breeze as your class works through the slides.
Teaching Clauses: Why It’s Important
Understanding what a clause is gives students a strong foundation for writing and reading. It’s one of those skills that quietly unlocks so many others. When students can confidently recognise subjects and verbs, they begin to understand how sentences are built and how meaning is shaped.
Here are some more insights into why teaching clauses is so important:
- Teaches students to write complete sentences rather than fragments.
- Increases writing sophistication through the use of longer clauses and conjunctions.
- Makes editing and revising a more purposeful and less overwhelming process.
- Supports further progression of grammar knowledge.
- Aids reading comprehension through enhanced understanding of subjects and verbs.
