Year 6 Area Sorting Activity for Hands-On Maths Learning

Teaching area becomes more meaningful when students can apply their knowledge in an interactive and purposeful way. This Year 6 Area Sorting Activity provides students with opportunities to calculate and compare the areas of rectangles, parallelograms and composite shapes while developing problem-solving skills.

In this resource, students sort and match 24 cards to create 8 complete sets. Each set includes a Shape Card, a Question Card and an Answer Card. Students calculate area using given measurements and use their reasoning to identify the correct matches.

The activity includes:

  • 24 sorting cards featuring shapes, word problems and answers.
  • A student work page for recording thinking and calculations.
  • Challenge cards for extending learning.
  • A teacher answer sheet for quick checking and assessment support.

This resource encourages active participation while reinforcing area concepts in a low-prep format. It is ideal for consolidating learning after explicit instruction and provides a fun alternative to traditional worksheets.

Area Activity Ideas for Engaging Maths Lessons

This versatile area activity can be adapted to suit a wide range of classroom needs and learning environments.

  • Maths investigation challenge – Hide different cards around the classroom and have students search for matches while solving area problems along the way.
  • Escape room task – Require students to complete all matching sets correctly before progressing to the next clue or challenge.
  • Real-world maths connection – Ask students to explain how the shapes and measurements could represent real objects such as gardens, rugs, signs or artwork.

Because students must calculate, compare and justify their answers, the activity promotes mathematical communication alongside procedural fluency.
