Area of Rectangles Activity That Builds Problem-Solving Skills

Understanding the area of rectangles is an important Grade 4 math skill that helps students measure space and apply multiplication in meaningful contexts. From finding the area of a classroom rug to planning a garden, students need plenty of opportunities to connect area concepts to real-world situations.

This Area Sorting Activity gives students an interactive way to practice finding area. Students work through a set of cards, matching each shape with its corresponding word problem and correct answer. As they solve each problem, they apply area formulas and use mathematical reasoning to complete the matches.

This resource includes:

  • 24 sorting cards
  • Shape cards, question cards, and answer cards
  • A student recording page
  • Challenge problems for extension
  • A complete teacher answer key

Because students must calculate, compare, and justify their answers, this activity promotes both conceptual understanding and math fluency while keeping learners actively engaged.

Calculating Area Through Interactive Learning

This calculating area resource can be used in a variety of creative ways throughout your math block.

  • Math centers – Add the cards to a station where students work together to solve and match each set.
  • Scoot activity – Place the cards around the room and have students move from card to card solving problems.
  • Math detective challenge – Give students one card and challenge them to find the matching problem and answer cards.

The flexible design makes it easy to reuse throughout the year for practice, review, and enrichment.
