Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Explain to the students that, now they have completed their floor rug designs, they will be applying their knowledge and understanding of fractions to answer a series of questions about their color choices.
Teacher Instruction
- Read through the Recording and Analyzing Worksheet in the investigation booklet. Answer any questions the students may have.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Allow the students to complete the six questions about their floor rug design. If teachers plan to use the investigation as an assessment tool, the students should be encouraged to complete this section of the task independently. The speed at which the students will complete these questions will vary.
Wrapping Up
- Ask the students to complete the Reflection Worksheet at the back of the investigation booklet.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Challenge fast finishers to write a series of addition and subtraction questions, or word problems, based on their color choices.
Supporting Students
- Encourage less confident students to independently complete as much of the Recording and Analyzing Worksheet as they can.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
