How to Fight Summer Learning Loss
We've all heard it and seen it — that long summer break away from educational activities and the lack of access to educational resources over the summer months can lead to a loss of academic skills and knowledge.
Sure, summer break has myriad benefits for students (and teachers!), but what can you do to fight summer learning loss?
Bring on the activity packets, designed by teachers to ensure students get some much-needed brain exercise during the summer months!
These packets contain a host of educational activities that students can complete over the summer break to encourage continued learning and help students retain the knowledge and skills they acquired during the school year.
Benefits of Summer Learning
Do kids really need you to send home a summer activity packet? Let's look at the research ... and the benefits!
Improved Academic Performance
When Duke University researchers did a meta-analysis of summer learning programs in 2000, they found that they had a positive effect on students' academic achievement, particularly in reading and math. Their findings were supported seven years later when Johns Hopkins University researchers found that kids who participated in summer learning programs showed gains in reading and math skills compared to their peers who did not participate.
Increased Engagement
Need further proof? Summer learning opportunities can also help increase students' motivation and engagement in learning. A 2011 study by researchers at the RAND Corporation found that students who participated in summer learning programs reported higher levels of motivation and engagement in school.
