Make indoor recess fun with a pirate ship model building activity and pirate history project idea.

Arr, Matey, It’s an Indoor Recess Idea!

When the wind is blowing outside, challenge your students to set sail on the high seas with a pirate ship-building activity perfect for keeping their minds active! Created by the Teach Starter teacher team, this printable activity sheet includes the full instructions to build a pirate ship using skewers, items from around the classroom and a printable ship template!

Pirate History Project

Are you looking to expand on this indoor recess activity for your history classes? Why not assign a research project on the history of pirates?

Challenge students to research the Golden Age of Piracy — which occurred between the 17th and 18th centuries — and create a biography on one of the more famous pirates, such as Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Anne Bonny or Calico Jack.

The project should include important details — including the pirate’s early life, notable achievements, famous battles, capture (if applicable) and any significant events or legends associated with them — as well as a conclusion that summarizes the key points of the pirate’s life and provide a closing statement.

Each project could include at least one to two of the following additional elements:

  • The pirate’s flag and an explanation of its significance
  • A timeline of the pirate’s life, highlighting important events and dates
  • A map showing the pirate’s voyages, notable locations and ports they frequented
  • Artifacts with captions explaining their significance
