Move and Group With Random Student Grouping Cards

Quickly form groups of 2–6 students with this streamlined set of Printable Random Student Grouping Cards, specially designed for older students and classrooms with limited color‑printing options. This set of random grouping cards is designed to be less distracting and easier to read. It keeps the visuals simple while still offering clear, high‑contrast symbols that stand out beautifully on black‑and‑white printers.

Perfect for classrooms of up to 30 students, these cards remove the pressure of forming equal groups while keeping the process productive, fair, and truly random.

Each card includes a mixture of letters, shapes, numbers, foods, and animals, giving you the flexibility to create clusters of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 using the same deck of grouping cards.

Using This Set of Random Group Generators for Older Students

Putting these Random Group Generators to work is simple and classroom‑ready:

  1. Hand out one card to each student, dispensing them in alphabetical order, beginning with the card labelled A.
  2. Students then locate their group by finding classmates with the matching symbol on their card.
  3. The symbol determines the group size you’re forming:
  • Groups of 2 — Sort by Letter
  • Groups of 3 — Sort by Shape
  • Groups of 4 — Sort by Number
  • Groups of 5 — Sort by Animal
  • Groups of 6 — Sort by Food

If you have an odd number of students, cards have been added so those students will join groups 1 or 2.
