Subordinating Conjunctions (Time) Interactive Activity

Looking for a fantastic and fun way to teach your students about using subordinating conjunctions to express references to time in their writing? This set of 24 digital tasks is perfect for individual or whole-class learning!

Students are required to read a given complex sentence, and determine (from a selection of three options) which word is the correct subordinating conjunction of time for each sentence. Students respond to the question by using  ‘drag and drop’ to place the correct subordinating conjunction into the sentence.

Subordinating conjunctions for time are used to introduce subordinate clauses that provide information about when or how often an action or event in the main clause occurs. These conjunctions help to establish temporal relationships between different parts of a sentence. Here are some frequently used conjunctions for time (temporal conjunctions) used in the English language:

• After
• Before
• When
• While
• Since
• Until
• Whenever

These subordinating conjunctions help your students create clear and cohesive narrative texts by establishing the timing and sequence of events.
