Use this Who’s the Audience? Activity when discussing and identifying the purpose and audience of a variety of different community signs and texts.
Purpose and Audience of Advertisements and Signs
In this Who’s the Audience? digital activity, students examine familiar signs and advertisements from their community — such as posters, labels, safety signs and shop displays. They learn to notice colors, symbols, words and layout to understand what the text is trying to do and who it is speaking to.
Each slide asks students to decide who the appropriate audience is out of three options, helping them practice purposeful decision making in a simple, accessible way.
Understanding Purpose and Audience in the Early Years
Understanding purpose and audience is an essential early‑years literacy skill. These slides help students recognize that every sign or advertisement is created for a reason — to inform, warn, persuade or help someone find something — and that the author always has a specific group of people in mind.
By exploring simple, real‑world examples, students learn to think about who a text is speaking to and why it was created. This builds foundational critical‑thinking skills and supports their ability to interpret the texts they encounter in their everyday lives.
